How I wash my makeup brushes

I know you’re SUPPOSED to wash your makeup brushes at least once a week but let’s be honest, does anyone really do that? I swear for a while I didn’t even know cleaning makeup brushes was a thing! But as I started to get more interested in makeup and started investing more into my brushes, I wanted to actually take care of them. But I didn’t want to have too long of a process because then I would never do it! So I tried a few different things and this seems to be the easiest way to clean my brushes in a practical amount of time.

What I use

  • Baby shampoo– nothing special just basic Johnson’s baby shampoo but I swear it really works!
  • Brush cleaning mat– this makes cleaning my brushes so easy! I used to just rub the brush on my hand but this works 10,000% better, and it’s only seven dollars right now!!
  • Any kind of disposable cup- I use a disposable coffee cup but red solo cups work all the same
  • A towel for drying

Step 1-

Put the brush cleaning mat down around the sink and pour a little bit of baby shampoo in your cup (you can always put more in if you use it all!). Then, rinse your brush under the water and make sure you keep the bristles facing down so the water doesn’t go past the handle, because that could possible damage the brush.

Step 2-

Dip the brush in the baby shampoo and gently rub it all over the mat until the brush it clean.

Step 3-

Next, rinse the brush off and gently squeeze out any excess water.

Step 4-

Now, it’s time to let them dry so you can get them dirty all over again! The best way I’ve found to dry them is to cover part of my counter with a towel and prop up the brushes so that they are essentially balancing on the bristles. This allows the water to go down and out. Your brushes will be dry in no time!

Results-

My brushes were pretty dirty this time but I think they looked pretty dang good after they were done!

BEFORE (yikes!!)

AFTER (much better!)
